Not many mobile games survive ten years at the top of their genre. Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle, developed by Akatsuki and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, has done exactly that. Released globally in July 2015 and now past 350 million downloads worldwide, it’s a game that defies easy categorization — part board game, part puzzle, part collectible card game — and somehow makes all of it work inside the Dragon Ball universe without sacrificing what makes either the franchise or the genre compelling.

Building a roster where Links fire consistently is where team-building goes from casual to genuinely strategic.

Categories add another dimension. Characters belong to groups like Realm of Gods, Full Power, Kamehameha, or Saiyan Saga, and certain events and leader skills reward players who build around a coherent category rather than simply stacking the highest-rated units available.

Content That Keeps Expanding

Quest mode provides the main story campaign, retelling Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super arcs through board-game-style maps with manga-style dialogue. Beyond that, the event structure is where most of a veteran player’s time goes. Growth events provide leveling materials. Extreme Z-Battle events revitalize older characters. Super Battle Road and the monthly Dokkan Virtual Ultimate Clash push optimized rosters to their limits against escalating boss encounters. Explosive Chain Battle adds a cooperative damage-racing format where player scores are ranked globally.

Anniversary periods — the game has now seen ten — bring some of the most anticipated content releases in mobile gaming, with new Legendary Rare units, expanded story chapters, and event volumes that reward active players substantially even without spending.

What keeps Dokkan Battle’s player base loyal over years rather than weeks is how the meta shifts. New character releases change which teams perform best, old units get awakened into relevance through Extreme Z-Battles, and the content calendar ensures something meaningful is always approaching.
